Satyam Sundaram (Meiyazhagan in Tamil): A heartwarming emotional drama about self-discovery and moving on

Much like C Prem Kumar’s last Jaanu a remake of his own movie 96 this movie also explores the theme of nostalgia in a different setting. The core plot of Satyam Sundaram is about a character’s inability to remember the name of the other. This results in numerous laugh loud out moments and also a hugely poignant moment towards the end

C Premkumar’s Satyam Sundaram is a definite breadth of fresh air from the larger than life pan India movies that the Indian viewers have been subjected to. This isn’t a film for those wanting elaborate action sequences, or romantic scenes with the heroines. The main plotline of Satyam Sundaram is paper thin but what makes it work is the depiction of human emotions. It also helps that both Aravind Swamy and Karthi are in perfect sync with each other. Both the actors are a delight to watch sharing a wonderful camaraderie.

Satyam Sundaram begins in the year 1996. A young Satyam is forced to leave both his house and hometown due to a family dispute. The first five to ten minutes establish Satyam’s deep attachment with the house. Fast forward to many years later Satyam has a settled life in Vizag. He has zero intentions of revisiting the past due to the painful nostalgia. But a situation comes when Satyam has to attend an important family wedding, with a lot of reluctance he returns to the native village of Uddandarayunipalem set in Guntur. His plan is to give the gift and quickly get away from there, but things don’t go according to plan. Satyam bumps into Karthi’s Sundaram. Satyam doesn’t recognize who Sundaram is but puts up an act of remembering him. Sundaram treats Satyam with a lot of affection further adding to Satyam’s predicament. That night Satyam misses the bus to Vizag, but his life undergoes a drastic change.

As already mentioned, the core plot of Satyam Sundaram is the protagonist inability to remember the other person’s name. Aravind Swamy’s Satyam recognizes Karthi’s character’s name and how they are related only in the pre- climax. This could have turned out very silly in the hands of an inefficient director, but C Premkumar makes these scenarios believable. The first ten to fifteen minutes have a very sobor tone, but the movie picks up huge momentum with the entry of Karthi.

Karthi’s Sundaram has shades of what he has already done in Vamshi Paidipally’s Oopiri. Just like that film here too he is the catalyst. Still Karthi shines big time with his vibrant presence. The dubbing done for Karthi does take a while getting used to, but the actor raises many chuckles with his witty dialogues and situational humor. He perfectly embodies the idealistic and selfless nature of Sundaram. Apart from the humorous scenes Karthi also makes a striking impact in the emotional scenes too.

Aravind Swamy’s Satyam is more of an introvert with a brooding nature and this works as a perfect contrast to Karthi’s energetic persona. Aravind Swamy does a splendid job in portraying Satyam’s trauma making the viewers feel the pain. He particularly shines in the scenes of Satyam trying to remember why Sundaram is being so affectionate towards him.

Their on-screen chemistry is what drives the movie majorly. The supporting cast comprising of Devadarshini as Satyam’s wife and Rajkiran as Sathyam’s uncle have brief yet memorable characters. Rajkiran in particular is extremely affective, he would remind the viewers a lot of their own uncles.

The film’s music by Govind Vasantha is striking too. The translation of the Tamil lyrics doesn’t feel jarring. The song Pothoo Nee Pothoo is especially memorable. Mahendiran Jayaraju’s cinematography is also of the highest order. The atmospherics of a rural life has been skillfully captured through his lens.

Satyam Sundaram doesn’t dwell much into the characters of greedy relatives. They are strictly cardboard cutouts meant to make the viewers empathize with Satyam. However, through this subplot the director does seem to be giving a message about forgiving people and in the process overcoming bitterness leading to a happier life.

Satyam Sundaram is a must watch for those like emotionally driven narratives.

Custody: A Competent Cop Drama That Keeps The Viewers Invested In Spite Of Its Shortcomings

Venkat Prabhu’s latest directorial takes time to find its feet but eventually gets better as the plot becomes thicker.

Cop dramas usually have a superhero cop who takes on an army of villains and vigilante justice is delivered. Venkat Prabhu’s Custody belongs to a slightly different space.

Here, Naga Chaitanya’s Shiva has the duty of protecting a goonda (criminal) and making sure that he is produced before the court, without any harm.

Another factor that makes Custody different from other movies of the same genre is the fact that Shiva is a constable, not a higher official. There is an underdog quality about him that makes him endearing.

Synopsis

The movie is set in the 1990s. Its opening shot is a terrible incident where 40 people die in a small town due to a gas cylinder blast. After that, we cut to the constable Shiva.

Shiva is someone who believes that human life is more important than anything else. This is wonderfully established when he rushes to stop the convoy of the Chief Minister (Priya Mani) so that an ambulance can pass.

Revathi (Krithi Shetty) is Shiva’s love interest. They both have a steady relationship for a while but there are some serious obstacles from her parents’ side.

Things take a turn with a car accident when Shiva is on the way to her house to save her from a forced marriage.

After the accident, two men are seen fighting – one is Raju (Aravind Swami) and the other is a CBI official George (Sampath Raj). Shiva ends up arresting both.

On reaching the police station, Shiva learns the true identity of Raju, a well-connected goonda with political backing. He needs to be produced at the Bangalore court in the next 24 hours to testify against some influential people.

Meanwhile, there is an assassination attempt to kill Raju before he reaches court. Shiva makes sure that the assassination attempt is not successful.

He and George escape from the police station with Raju. But IG Natraj (Sarathkumar) is hell-bent on making sure that Raju doesn’t reach the Bangalore court.

Adding to the mayhem, Revathi escapes from her house by making her prospective groom (Vennela Kishore) a bakra.

The rest of the story deals with whether Shiva is successful or not in producing Raju before the court and what happens to him and Revathi later.

Shortcomings & best moments

Custody begins engagingly. As viewers, we instantly connect with Shiva’s honesty and want him to succeed in whatever he does.

But things go haywire with the addition of the love story and also an irritating comedy track featuring Vennala Kishore.

The songs also come as major speed breakers, which is surprising, given that it is the first time that the father-son duo of Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvun Shankar Raja have worked together.

It is a step down from Ilaiyaraaja after a soulful soundtrack in Krishna Vamsi’s Rangamarthanda (2023).

Nevertheless, the plot becomes more engaging with the entry of Aravind Swami. The action set piece in the police station is wonderfully staged. Here, it has to be mentioned that, the background score is much better than the songs.

The cat-and-mouse chase involving Natraj, Raju and Shiva gives the film some of its best moments.

Another action stretch that deserves a mention is the pre-interval block involving an underwater sequence.

We see an unlikely bond developing between Shiva and Raju through the journey. This has been well-etched by Venkat Prabhu.

Impressive show by actors

Aravind Swami does a wonderful job in making sure that Raju, despite being a goonda, comes across as endearing. He also brings in some dry humour that raises many chuckles.

Much like in Sekhar Kammula’s Love Story (2021), here too, Naga Chaitanya plays an underdog and delivers a wonderful performance.

He does justice to the arc of the character which goes from a happy-go-lucky guy in the flashback to a determined young man in the present.

Krithi Shetty alternates between a typically chirpy heroine and a serious woman. She does it quite well in spite of the romantic track coming across as a hurdle.

Sarathkumar as Natraj makes for a formidable opposition.

Thalaivi: Starts Off Promisingly But Loses Steam Midway

The life of Jayalalithaa makes for an engaging dramatic story. She was someone who treaded her own path in the industry and later became an iron- fisted politician. There are highs and lows in her life both as an actress and also as a politician. Not surprisingly many biopics were announced after death. You have already had Gautam Menon’s web series Queen starring Ramya Krishna as Jayalalithaa. There was also the announcement of Nithya Menon playing Jayalalithaa alongside the Kangana Ranaut’s one directed by AL Vijay.

Out of the two AL Vijay’s one has been creating lot of buzz. Apart from the real life personality Kangana playing the title role has also helped in the buzz. After seeing Thalaivii the first thing that comes to your mind is how much of Kangana’s presence affected the film particularly in the second half. Al Vijay does a good job in exploring in the Jayalalithaa and MGR relationship along with the impact that MGR had in her joining politics. The MGR character is played by the terrific Aravind Swamy. But the film dips badly in the second half and never really recovers.

There is nothing wrong in playing to the gallery but AL Vijay along with writer Vijayendra Prasad overplayed the masala. It also doesn’t help that the film becomes melodramatic. It is a shame because Thalaivii had lot of potential.

Thailavii begins off with a disturbing scene where Jayalalithaa is molested in the Vidhan Sabha. She compares herself to Draupadi and makes a vow that she will enter the assembly only after becoming the chief minister. From there we move to Jaya’s acting journey. We see her dancing around the tress and also wearing some striking retro costumes. The first half is mostly devoted to establishing the bond between Jaya and MGR. We see MGR helping her in being more comfortable in front of the camera. Slowly Jaya starts having a significant space in MGR’s life. It doesn’t go down too well with Raj Arun who plays the trusted man of MGR. There are also glimpses of Karunanidhi played by Nassar and MGR entering into politics. The second half takes a big shift as the plot looks at Jayalalithaa’s political entry and how she became a revered leader.

One of the things that AL Vijay gets right is recreation of the period. The atmospherics in the first half fits the time zone aptly. The costumes are beautiful without making it come across as gaudy. The set design is also appropriate and there are times where you will get nostalgic.

Aravind Swamy, as I earlier said, is brilliant. He does an outstanding job in making sure that MGR doesn’t come across a caricature. He particularly shines in the second half as the politician. His scenes with Kangana are emotionally quite moving. A scene which I really liked was after her bharatnatyam performance. He says to her that if he hadn’t come as a chief minister he would have whistled there itself. After that we see him closing the door and giving a loud whistle much to Jaya’s surprise.

The biggest issue with Thalaivii is the rushed portrayal of Jayalalithaa’s entry into politics. An important incident related to the misuse of MGR’s Midday Meal scheme doesn’t have the emotional impact that it needed to have. There are many instances in the second half where you feel that the makers are playing to Kangana’s image instead of focusing on the core story.

The character of Karunanidhi also doesn’t leave any impact whatsoever. Nassar has the presence but is severely underutilised and comes across as a caricature.

Coming to Kangana Ranaut the actress tries hard to fill in the big shoes. She fares better as an actress than as a politician. The makeup and the effort to look hefty in the second half just doesn’t work.

A personality like Jayalalithaa deserves a far better attempt than this.
